Anywho… another thread saying: I’m glad I’m here. Already I’ve seen solid, well-thought-out actions taken to protect users and avoid hate with a people-centric motivation

I originally fell in love with Mastodon after spinning up an instance in December 2018 for my immediate family members.
It has been a game changer to share our lives with each other without all the downsides of surveillance capitalism.
So excited that more folks are joining the fediverse. It’s only going to get better from here. Let’s make it better together. ❤️

Social media buyouts kill platforms

One of the biggest benefits of Mastodon is that it cannot be bought. The acquisition of a platform immediately does two things
1. Loads the company down with debt
2. Changes all the goals of the company to cut costs & increase revenue

I'm not super intelligent, but I am very kind. I don't expect to change the world by curing a disease or inventing something great or doing some heroic deed, but I hope that my heart felt words get somebody through a tough time who does do one of those things.

We do not all need to change the world, we can potentially have the same impact by taking the time to change just one person's world at a time.

The plummeting profits of big tech are directly attributable to the plummeting trust in the organizations losing the most money.

They brought this on themselves by trying to monetize surveillance and being bad stewards of our data, and unfortunately, tech workers will suffer before any CEO suffers.

At a meta level, something I find mildly interesting is how many people are writing stuff on Mastodon about how it's impossible for Mastodon to scale up without using an ad supported model (b/c server costs), it's better to have ranked feeds because most people want them, etc.

The thing I think is interesting is that the people writing this stuff, implicitly, seemingly cannot conceive of a model where the organization is not growth and profit maximizing.

If you're just getting started on here, you may be wondering why this place has so many servers and apps. Why make it so complicated?

Twitter is all on one server (twitter.com). This made it VERY easy for Musk to buy it. Any centralised network can be bought out just like this.

The Fediverse is different: as long as we stay spread out on many servers, no one will ever be able to buy this network, not even the richest person in the world.

@jhpot “I’m done using my skill to create value for billionaires.”

Well said. Me too. We should be creating something for ourselves, collectively— for humanity.

With the total freakout on Twitter, it serves people's right to have built their marketing empires there. Now they may once again start to value the value of owning their stack and their own .com

BTW some of the powerful tools any of us can use are: filters, muting, blocking, blocking all the boosts made by any individual, blocking an entire server. And yeah, sure, there should be good protective moderation rules in place BUT we can all also help create the experience that best suits us individually. And: you can have all the moderation rules you want but you are likely to see stuff you may not like esp. on federated timelines UNLESS you use some personal management options in settings,

Eight things to consider when photographing architecture.

Architecture is all around us. Sometimes we use our cameras to create art from what we see instead of merely capturing moments. Here are a few suggestions to help you see the art in architecture the next time you head out to shoot it.

Don’t underestimate the importance of Masto.

It’s like the internet itself, or AWS making it easy to create your own version of Linux, or PCs letting you have your own computer.

I experienced all these liberations. Some thought these unthinkable, and controlled silos do serve a purpose as training wheels. But after some time you grow up and it’s time to leave home and create your own world.

Cont’d.

Setting up your own instance or server on Mastodon offers clear verification that it's the domain for your organisation. We moved to @social.openrightsgroup.org yesterday for this reason. #MastodonWebinar

@fedi I like Liberapay better than Patreon because it's FLOSS, non-profit, doesn't charge a fee and the income history is visible.
