PeerTube is a video sharing platform for the Fediverse, a free open decentralised alternative to YouTube.
You can find out more at:
PeerTube federates with the rest of the Fediverse, so you can follow PeerTube accounts from Mastodon etc and share videos, comment on them, like them etc too.
Here's an example account you can follow: @craftykat
PeerTube works in a really clever way: if lots of people watch the same video at the same time, they transmit the video to each other by peer-to-peer. This means even if a video goes viral, the PeerTube site that hosts it doesn't crash. Even small sites can provide videos for a large audience.
This is explained in an official animation:
If you're non-techy, you can make your own PT instance on a managed hosting service like https://federation.spacebear.ee
If you're techy, you can install your own PT instance with these instructions: https://github.com/Chocobozzz/PeerTube/blob/develop/support/doc/production.md

Here's Cory Doctorow (@pluralistic) with some thoughts on the Framework laptop which has great reparability and customization. Exciting to see how it evolves over time although it does look promising here. https://pluralistic.net/2021/09/21/monica-byrne/#think-different

Mobilizon is an event organising platform for the Fediverse, a free open source alternative to Facebook Events.

In no particular order, web sites like OpenStreetMap, Wikipedia, Archive.Org, Sci-Hub, tools like I2P, Tor, IRC, GPG, OMEMO, OTR, and open and federated protocols like Jabber, Email, Diaspora and ActivityPub are the most important projects on the internet and should be protected and exalted.

If you want to help spread the word about the Fediverse, try politely asking your favourite sites, organisations or projects what their Fediverse/Mastodon/PixelFed etc address is.
Obviously not everyone has the time or the spoons to maintain social media accounts, but just casually asking for an address will indirectly let them know the Fediverse exists.
The more people that ask them, the more likely they are to find out more about the Fediverse and join 👍

“European Commission announced … follow-up legislation that will make the use of chatcontrol mandatory for all e-mail and messenger providers.”
Guess what isn’t covered by this? Yes, the Small Web. Is it time to take the idea that we could all own our own places on the Web and communicate with each other privately seriously? I think so, at least.
The social network of the future: No ads, no corporate surveillance, ethical design, and decentralization! Own your data with Mastodon!
